CDC reports 22 cases of UK coronavirus strain in Florida

THE CDC, IN FLORIDA. SUMMER: IN THE MEANTIME, YESTERDAY, FLORIDA AGAIN BROKE ITS PREVIOUS SINGLE-DAY RECORD OF CORONAVIRUS CASES, ADDING NEARLY 20,000 INFECTED PEOPLE. >> IT’S NOT UNUSUAL FOR VIRUSES TO TRANSFORM. >> THE MUTANT STRAIN OF COVID-19 HAS ARRIVED. SO FAR, THE CDC HAS TRACKED DOWN 52 CASES NATIONWIDE, WITH NEARLY HALF, 22, IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA. ONLY CALIFORNIA HAS MORE, WITH 26. HOW MANY CASES ARE OUT THERE WE DON’T KNOW ABOUT? >> THERE COULD BE A LOT MO CASES THAT WE HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT. >> BECAUSE THIS VERSION REQUIRES A DIFFERENT TEST. ALTHOUGH THIS NEW STRAIN OF COVID-19 DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE MORE DEADLY, IT IS EASIER TO SPREAD, AND THAT HAS HEALTH OFFICIALS WORRIED. >> WITH THE TRANSMISSIBILITY O THIS STRAIN BEING INCREASED COMPARED TO THE ORIGINAL STRAIN, IT IS POSSIBLE THIS STRAIN COULD SPREAD A LOT FASTER. THAT IS THE NATURE OF THIS STRAIN SO WE COULD SEE THIS , STRAIN BECOME THE DOMINANT ONE. >> SINCE THE HOLIDAYS, THERE HAS BEEN A SURGE OF COVID-19 CASES IN FLORIDA AND THE NATION. THE LAST THING WE NEED IS A STRAIN OF COVID THAT SPREADS FASTER THAN THE ORIGINAL, BUT WE HAVE GOT IT. >> THE VACCINES THAT ARE BEING ROLLED OUT ARE THOUGHT TO PROTECT AGAINST THIS VARIANT AS WELL, BUT WE NEED TO STAY AGGRESSIVE TODAY SO WE DON’T SEE ADDITIONAL VARIANTS TO COME. >> THERE IS STILL A LOT TO LEARN ABOUT THE NEW STRAIN OF CORONAVIRUS, BUT WE GET IT THE SAME WAY. SO HEALTH OFFICIALS SAY THE SAME RULES APPLY — WEAR A MASK, WASH YOUR HANDS, SOCIAL DISTANCE. IN ORA

CDC reports 22 cases of UK coronavirus strain in Florida

There are now 22 identified cases of the more contagious, mutated coronavirus strain first detected in the U.K. in Florida, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC said there are a total of 52 cases in the United States. Only California, with 26 cases, has more than Florida. There are two cases in Colorado, and one in both Georgia and New York. The CDC said the figures do not represent the actual number of cases floating around in the country, which they estimate to be much higher than the reported number. “The cases identified above are based on a sampling of SARS-CoV-2-positive specimens and do not represent the total number of B.1.1.7 lineage cases that may be circulating in the United States and may not match numbers reported by states, territories, tribes and local officials,” the CDC said. The Florida Department of Health announced on New Year’s Eve that a man in his 20s in Martin County was the first in the state to be identified with the strain.Scientists in the UK believe the variant is more contagious than previously identified strains. The vaccines being given now are thought to be effective against the variant.
