New blood test, created by Californian company Grail, detects cancers among over-50s – The Times

A simple blood test that can detect more than 50 types of cancer is accurate enough to be used as a screening tool for the over-50s, a trial has concluded.

The NHS will begin a pilot scheme of the test with 140,000 people this year. If that is successful it will be used for millions of patients by 2025.

A paper today in the journal Annals of Oncology showed that the test, created by the Californian company Grail, accurately detected cancer, including in people without symptoms, and had a low false positive rate. It also predicted with a high degree of accuracy where the cancer was located.
